Giving a commissioned portrait painting to a loved
one or to yourself can be a very special and enjoyable experience.
Tom likes to begin the process by getting to know
the client and discussing their ideas for the portrait. Together
they may select the clothing to be worn and any props or background
elements that might add to the portrait.
Tom works from both personal sittings and photographs.
He prefers to photograph the subject himself, to record impressions,
poses and control lighting. Using a combination of elements from
different photographs, sketches and sittings the composition and
detailed drawing for the portrait are produced.
Tom works with oils on canvas, wood panel or clayboard.
He employs a traditional method of underpainting and uses
thin glazes to produce a realistic painting of
luminous classical style.
How much will it cost?
As you will appreciate there are many variations to
a painting such as the size of the work, the number of elements
in the painting, one or more people, a plain or more complex background
and the type of support the painting is on i.e. canvas,
wood or panel and, of course the selection of the
frame. Each painting will usually take from two to six months
to complete.
In keeping with the standard practice for portrait
work, Tom requires a deposit of 50% to begin the painting. He
will show the completed composition and drawing work prior to
the commencement of the painting.
The balance is payable when the portrait is completed.
Tom will make every effort to create a portrait that satisfies
you completely.
